ABOUT HOMEOPATHY
Homeopathy is a system of medicine developed by a German physician, Dr. Samuel Hahneman in 1796. Homeopathy is based on the law of similarity: “Like cures like”. This principle was first recognized by Hipocrates, the father of modern medicine in 5 BC.
One of the most significant principles of homeopathy is that: it treats the person and not the disease. Therefore, two people with the same diagnosis will most likely be treated with different remedies, based on the totality of their symptoms (mental, emotional and physical). In this way the treatment is tailored to match the person, not the diagnosis.
Contrary to conventional medicine, where a patient is directed to various specialists who treat different organs, a homeopath treats both mental and physical ailments, regardless of their location, using one homeopathic remedy. Homeopathic doctor looks at the various symptoms which the patient experiences, not as separate unrelated ailments, but as different manifestations of one central disarrangement of the Vital Force.
Homeopathy recognises the existence of a Vital Force, our inner intelligence, the energy -life force, that makes us alive. When the Vital Force is out of balance, our body produces symptoms on physical, mental and emotional level as a result. Homeopathic remedies, are used to stimulate the Vital Force , our inner doctor, to bring about self healing..
The homeopathic method of treatment focuses on searching for the root cause of disease. Homeopathy regards symptoms as valuable signs for understanding disease. Through symptoms our bodies signal us that things are not how they should be. The right homeopathic remedy will bring about improvement both physically and psychologically.
Homeopathy treats both acute and chronic ailments, physical and psychological. Homeopathic medicine has a preventative aspect to it and the well chosen, constitutional homeopathic remedy can also be taken to prevent or diminish susceptibility towards disease.
This way we do not need to get ill to start appreciating our health.
HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES
Homeopathic remedies are all made from natural substances, mostly of plant and mineral origin. They are non-toxic and they leave no side effects.
To achieve this, homeopathic remedies are diluted to the point that the original substance be present only in traces or on it’s vibrational level as energy information. This method increases the medicinal properties of the substance, while decreasing it’s potential toxicity.
Homeopathic remedies are made by homeopathic pharmacies and they all have their DIN number.
WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM HOMEOPATHY?
Since the main principle of homeopathy is to treat the person and not the disease, anybody can benefit from it. Homeopathy can be used as a valuable help during pregnancy, when many other treatments are restricted. Homeopathy in Paediatrics yields excellent results and children respond well to treatment, in most cases faster than adults, since the Vital Force in children is stronger.
Homeopathy treats both acute and chronic ailments, mental, emotional, or physical. Even a healthy person can use homeopathic treatment to prevent or diminish susceptibility towards disease, by taking his or her constitutional homeopathic remedy.
Homeopathic treatment combines well with other modalities of treatment, and is complimentary to many, therefore, there is no need to discontinue other therapies or medications while using homeopathic remedies.
HOMEOPATHIC CONSULTATION
The first homeopathic consultation is an extensive interview/conversation with the patient. During a consultation a homeopathic doctor needs to collect as much information about the patient as possible e.g. main complaints, existing ailments, energy level both mental and physical, worries and concerns, stress level, disposition and character traits, appetite, sleep patterns, favourite food and seasons, childhood, family history, and many other details that might seem unrelated to the original ailment. However, all these symptoms assist the homeopath, in perceiving a holistic picture of the patient and selecting an adequate remedy. Homeopathy is also known as “holistic,“ medicine because it takes into account the whole person.
The first homeopathic consultation usually lasts one and a half hours after which a homeopathic remedy is prescribed. A follow- up visit will be scheduled about a month later. During the follow- up visit the homeopath determines the patients reaction to the remedy, scope of improvement, new symptoms if any, and any other changes/improvements on an emotional, physical or mental level. Further consultations will be scheduled between a month or two later and so on until a cure is achieved. For maintenance of health and disease prevention it is suggested to visit a homeopathic doctor 2-3 times a year, especially during the change of season.
SUCCESS OF HOMEOPATHY
It needs to be emphasized that homeopathic treatment is a process during which time the patient is gradually brought back to a balanced state and their health restored on both a physical, psychological and mental level. The process of achieving this state of balance takes time. Since homeopathy does not suppress or manage symptoms but attempts to restore health, patience and commitment are very important. Success of homeopathic treatment depends on choosing the right remedy and for this there needs to be good cooperation and regular communication between patient and homeopath. The success of homeopathic treatment, therefore depends equally on the patient as well as the homeopath.
Taking the remedy as prescribed, following advice on nutrition and lifestyle changes and timely follow-ups are key to homeopathy’s success. Failing to achieve health improvement with homeopathic treatment can often be contributed to patients lack of consistency and discontinuing treatment early, due to impatience and unwillingness to take responsibility for their own health.
In homeopathic practice patients who do best are those who follow the prescribed protocol, communicate with the doctor and come regularly for check-ups.
As in everything in life, consistency and commitment yield most results.
